Natural bedding brand Woolroom has taken its commitment to better sleep and clean living to the next level, as it launches an even more natural and sustainable range of wool mattresses.
Available from 14 February, the Artisan mattress collection features each of Woolroom’s well-loved existing mattress models, from the Standen to the Blackwell, but with more natural materials than ever before – from the mattress borders to the all-natural fillings and encased springs within.
The Artisan range also places a focus on the expert craftsmanship of Woolroom’s skilled teams of artisans. Each wool-filled mattress is handcrafted over a two-day period, using traditional mattress making techniques honed over centuries.
Chris Tattersall, managing director of Woolroom said: “Sleep is a superpower, and the key to truly restorative sleep is quality bedding. At Woolroom, we’re always seeking new ways to push the boundaries for healthy, sustainable sleep, and our new collection does just that. The Artisan range elevates each of our traditional mattresses by ensuring we use only the finest natural fillings, and a wool filled border also now wraps around all our mattresses and divans.”
The journey of a Woolroom Artisan wool mattress begins on a small selection of trusted British farms, where British wool is ethically sourced from well cared for, open-grazing sheep, which is 100% traceable through Woolroom’s unique Wool ID® programme. After the wool is hand graded at the British Wool grading depot, Woolroom’s mattress artisans begin a meticulous production process.

Calico centre-tied springs, free from glue and easy to deconstruct at end of life, are individually tied by hand for precision and tailored support. The naturally temperature regulating and hypoallergenic wool filling is hand-teased, or layered and then tufted, to ensure even distribution. The edges and structure are strengthened with traditional hand side-stitching, a sign of true luxury and quality craftsmanship.
For the final touches, tape-edging is used to enhance the durability and elegant appearance of the mattress, while the label is embroidered on with over 10,000 stitches.
Chris added: “There is not a step in the process of creating our Artisan collection that doesn’t involve exceptionally skilled artisans, who pay incredible attention to detail and take great pride in their work. Every stitch and layer is placed with care, ensuring superior durability and years of exceptional comfort from each mattress.
“Your sleep environment should be as natural, healthy, sustainable and comfortable as possible. Along with avoiding harsh chemicals, glues and synthetics, wool’s naturally flame-resistant properties also mean, unlike the majority of brands and products on the market, we don’t use flame retardant chemicals, and even use soft merino wool in our outer fabric, known as ticking, to meet all fire regulations.
“Our commitment to only using the most natural materials and methods not only ensures a healthier sleep environment but also means that once your mattress does come to the end of its life, it is fully recyclable – from the biodegradable wool filling, right down to the finest steel springs that can be used time and time again.”
With sustainability at the heart of its products, Woolroom’s range of certifications includes the Global Organic Textiles Standard (GOTS) status for its Organic Washable Wool bedding range, Allergy UK Seal of Approval, OEKO-TEX Class 100 Certified, Wool ID® traceability, British Wool Shepherd’s Crook and more, making it one of the only UK bedding brands to provide a truly ethical and sustainable sleep.
