Lighting and furniture retailer enters liquidation; launches clearance event

Lighting and furniture retailer Christopher Wray has been placed into liquidation owing creditors almost £800,000.

Natalie Hughes, of Simply Corporate Limited, was appointed as liquidator of Christopher Wray’s Lighting Emporium Limited, trading as Christopher Wray, on 5 August 2022.

Detailed in newly filed documents on Companies House, the business owed preferential creditor HMRC £305,000, as well as employee claims of just over £9,600.

As for unsecured creditors, a combined figure totalled £471,000, including £156,000 owed to trade claims, of which sees 20 consumer claims total £98,000.

Other claims include £41,000 owed to a director’s loan, £192,000 owed to banks and other loans, as well as further employee claims of around £81,000.

It is anticipated that a total shortfall will result at £785,000, while shareholders will lose a value of £4.5m.

Following liquidation, connected company owners set up newco CW Clearance Ltd on 12 August and has launched a four-week clearance sale including stock and display items. The Christopher Wray website has been disabled other than to promote the sale period.

The site states that ‘everything must go’ with products reduced by a ‘minimum 50%’ and ‘some items up to 75%’, with sales to only be made in person from its shop on Kings Road in London.
