Homeware high street sales return to growth during August

Homeware sales rose on the high street, marking a thirteenth positive result so far in 2024.

According to the latest BDO High Street Sales Tracker, total like-for-like (LFL) sales rose 1.76% for the week ending 25 August 2024.

Homeware total LFL sales jumped by +7.18% this week from a base of +3.15% for the same week last year, symbolising the category’s thirteenth positive result so far in 2024.

Store homewares LFL sales soared by +16.20% from a solid base of +13.43% for the same week last year, denoting the category’s thirteenth positive outcome so far in 2024.

Total in-store LFL sales dropped by -0.88% from a strong base of +8.40% for the same week last year. Total non-store LFL sales grew by +4.74% from a weak base of -0.33% for the same week last year, marking the channel’s seventeenth consecutive positive outcome.

Commenting on the results, BDO said: “Total LFL sales were mainly sustained by healthy online results led by lifestyle and fashion in a week that culminated with the Summer bank holiday weekend. In contrast, total in-store LFL sales recorded a third consecutive negative week, marking the first time such has happened since February.

“The UK’s weather took an unsettled turn this week with northwestern parts seeing mostly wet and windy conditions and drier and less windy towards the southeast. The same week last year saw more settled conditions marked by warm and dry weather.”

Overall footfall went down by -0.1% compared to the same week last year. High street footfall dropped by -2.0% while footfall in shopping centres saw a decline of -0.5%. Retail park footfall, on the other hand, saw an increase of +4.4%.
