Homeware high street sales down in November

Homeware sales fell on the high street, indicating the twenty-sixth negative result in 2024 for the category.

According to the latest BDO High Street Sales Tracker, total like-for-like (LFL) sales declined 1.08% for the week ending 10 November 2024.

Total homewares LFL sales fell by -0.61% this week from a positive base of +5.52% for the same week last year, marking the twenty-sixth negative result in 2024 for the category.

Store sales for homewares fell by -2.61% from a strong base of +10.09% from the same week in 2023, representing the category’s twenty-fourth negative result in 2024.

Total in-store LFL sales sank by -5.35% from a base of +3.34% for the same week in 2023. Total non-store LFL sales rose by +3.73% from a negative base of -1.83% for the same week last year.

Commenting on the results, BDO said: “Despite a positive performance for non-store sales, total LFL sales remained in negative territory for a third straight week due to weak store outcomes as the category recorded its lowest result since the final week of April.

“This week saw mostly grey but some bright skies with mild and generally dry conditions for many parts of the UK. During the same week last year, the weather in the UK was predominantly wet and windy due to Storm Debi.”

Overall footfall grew by +0.2% compared to the same week last year, an increase that was fuelled by high street traffic, which rose by +2.2%. This result was opposed by footfall at shopping centres and retail parks which declined by -3.3% and -0.3% respectively.
