Woolroom achieves world first with first GOTS-certified bedding

Organic bedding brand Woolroom has officially gained Global Organic Textiles Standard (GOTS) status for its Organic Wool bedding range, making it the first and only bedding in the world that is GOTS-certified and machine washable.

The leading worldwide certification for processing organic fibres established in 2006, GOTS sets strict environmental and social criteria throughout the textile supply chain. To become GOTS-certified, a product must adhere to rigorous standards at every stage of production – from manufacturing and packaging to labelling and distribution.

Achieving GOTS certification means Woolroom’s Organic Wool range – consisting of a mattress topper, protector, pillow and a choice of four duvets – complies with stringent ethical and sustainable requirements, is fully traceable to the farm from which it came, with all processes verified by an independent third-party certified body.

With comfort also key to the brand’s offering, Woolroom has made its Organic Mattress Topper deeper for the new GOTS-certified collection, which is now available in 1,300gsm compared to the previous 1,000gsm.

Only 112 British textile brands qualified for the certification in 2023 according to the latest report, demonstrating the huge amount of work to be done by the British bedding industry to improve transparency across the supply chain, according to Chris Tattersall, managing director of Woolroom.

Chris said: “Our GOTS-certified Organic Wool bedding range is something that we’re really proud of and have worked hard to perfect over many years. Given the list of British producers with this level of certification is so small, the industry must do more to give shoppers the information required to make informed decisions about their bedding – especially as we spend roughly a third of our lives in bed.

“The use of sustainable bedding materials is not only important for the protection of our planet and people, but it also has a tangible impact on the quality of sleep we have each night. According to our Clean Sleep Report, over 60% of Brits get less than six hours of sleep a night, but using sustainable bedding made from natural materials, such as wool, have been scientifically proven to boost chances of gaining deeper, more regenerative sleep, by 25%.

“Wool is an incredible material that is naturally temperature-regulating, and our traceable British wool is sourced from local farms that ensure the highest welfare of both sheep and farmers. It’s grown without harmful pesticides, synthetic fertilisers or genetically modified organisms (GMOs), and unlike synthetic fibres, it is free of toxic treatments, making it hypoallergenic and chemical-free. To us, opting for wool really is a no-brainer, and we’ve seen first-hand the life-changing benefits sleeping with wool brings.”

The brand’s pillow, duvets and mattress protector within the Organic Wool range are the first washable bedding products in the world to achieve GOTS status, further cementing Woolroom’s position as a leader in the organic bedding market.

Woolroom’s wider range of certifications includes Allergy UK Seal of Approval, OEKO-TEX Class 100 Certified, Wool ID traceability, Shepherd’s Crook and more, making it one of the only UK bedding brands to provide Brits with a truly ethical sleep.
